Eddie Quinn asks a rhetorical question in the middle of a heavy scene with his alcoholic wife, Maureen (Robin Wright Penn). Eddie’s wondering why her face is a bruised, pulpy mess. But Maureen won’t tell him she was raped by their drunken neighbor, Kiefer, because she knows Eddie’s liable to start shooting. After learning the truth, Eddie plies himself with multiple shots of Siberian Mist -- and loses his mind. After spewing a battery of verbal nonsense, he pulls out that gun and uses it.
Ten years later, Eddie’s still in the nuthouse, but he’s due to be released. How does he handle the fact that Maureen was the one who turned him in, who never wrote him, who divorced him and who is now married with three daughters to a guy called Joey (John Travolta). -- Desson Howe
