A 30-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon outside a post office in Southeast Washington, along the border with Maryland, according to D.C. police.

The shooting occurred about 2:20 p.m. in the 400 block of Southern Avenue SE, in the Washington Highlands neighborhood.

Police identified the victim as Christopher Washington, of Southeast. Authorities said he was shot multiple times and died at a hospital.

A police report says Washington was shot on a sidewalk in front of the Congress Heights post office, a branch located south of the Congress Heights neighborhood.

The report says a rifle was used in the shooting, and that ShotSpotter — devices that detect the sounds of gunshots — alerted police to 11 rounds.
